I am using the lower bar to hang bags and purses from beneath some tops; I am happy (and relieved) it is able to support the weight of the bags. The horizontal hanging space adjusts between 19" and 35". The 38" mentioned in the product description is the full maximum width of the unit, including the two vertical bars.The one point of difficulty I had with the "instructions" (non-verbal, images only) came from the small black plastic pieces that essentially fill the loose space between the loops on the horizontal bar and the two vertical bars. The loops at each end of the horizontal bar slide easily up and down until they slip over a pair of the black plastic pieces, which *appear* to be intended to snap around the vertical bars, one pair on each side. In other words, two of the black pieces fit at the bottom... It was super easy to put together and functions exactly as it should--no muss, no fuss! It is also well made and there appears to have been a fair amount of thought that went into the design. I didn't hang really heavy stuff on it--too chicken, I guess. I'm sure it would have held up to the weight of the slacks but I just didn't feel like chancing it. I've hung my slacks from the garment rack rod and have blouses hanging on the bottom extension. I like the idea, too, that it's expandable. I don't have it open as wide as it will go yet it still affords plenty of room to hang things on. The expandability is a nice feature that I will be able to use as my closet configuration changes.
